The Nuts and Bolts: The Business of Being a Writer
With Alex Kava and her business manager, Deb Carlin
After 116 rejections Alex Kava realized that writing novels and getting published had to be approached differently. If she wanted it to be her career, her business, then she needed to treat it as a business. Today Alex Kava is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. Her novels are published in 24 countries and have made the bestseller lists in the UK, Australia, Germany, Poland, Italy and Japan.
This workshop is for writers wanting to get published and already published authors who want to keep getting published and improve their book sales.
Here’s a sample of the topics addressed:
Getting published and staying published: doing your homework in choosing agents and designing a query letter that gets notices. For already published authors, what to do to ensure you stay that way.
Changing agents: As an established author one of the most difficult things to do – and too often, overlooked and put off – is changing agents. This is your business partner. If your agent isn’t as enthusiastic about your career and working as hard as you are for the same goals, it might be time to look for another business partner.
Taking charge of your career:
What to ask for in your contract (who says you can’t have a say in your cover designs?);
Adding your own grassroots efforts to promoting your book;
Developing your own brand;
How important are author webpages;
Really understanding your royalty statement.
